A study produced by James Cook University (JCU) has discovered men are at risk of developing depression during the period of time when a baby's born.

A number of factors contribute to 10% of all Australian fathers showing signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety during the perinatal period.

Among the reasons is a negative stigma surrounding masculinity and depression, which causes many cases, unreported.

Dr Jasleen Chhabra from JCU says the findings suggest maternal depression, marital problems and parental stress are also unique risk factors for father's mental health during this period.
