In July this year, the Morrison government announced a revised policy to close the gap in education, housing, health, incarceration and culture between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by 2031. The government doubled its targets from 8 to 16, adding new targets in.

Amnesty International Australia Indigenous Adviser and Palawa Elder Rodney Dillon said he’s waiting for action and practical solutions to close the gap.

While the National Indigenous Australian Agency said for the first time they included Indigenous communities in the process, through representatives called the Coalition of Peaks to tailor good targets, it was not enough to represent all the different communities’ opinions, as there cannot only be one Aboriginal voice according to Rodney Dillon.

From the release of the new agreement, all the parties involved which are the Commonwealth Government, State and Territory governments, the Coalition of Peaks, and the Australian Local Government Association, have 12 months to deliver their implementation plan.

We will have to wait a year to see what actions the government want to take.
