The Queensland Institute of Medical Research Berghofer has released findings from a new study on the causes of skin tumours, suggesting that alcohol and tobacco can be as dangerous as the sun when it comes to skin cancers.

The study is the largest of its kind, involving over 40,000 Queenslanders and spanning four years, yet the advice gleaned from it is shockingly simple.

With excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco use found to be contributing factors to the development of skin tumours, QIMR Berghofer recommends cutting back on these substances in addition to regular sun protection guidelines, like wearing sunscreen and hats and staying in the shade where possible.
