The United Nations says a sharp increase in natural disasters can be blamed on climate change, according to a new report.

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction says major disaster events have nearly doubled in the last 20 years, costing the global economy around $2.97 trillion dollars.

Around 3000 more natural disaster events occurred from 2000 to 2019 than in the years 1980 to 1999.

The report noted a sharp increase in climate-related disasters including floods, droughts and storms.
