The European Union is gearing up to place sanctions on Russia after receiving no credible explanation regrading the poisoning of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

The proposal lead by France and Germany hinges on the finding of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons that discovered the presence of the banned soviet era nerve agent Novichok in Navalny’s body.

If the sanctions are to be imposed they will need the approval of experts from the 27 European states, EU diplomats have spoken of board support across the union for asset freezes and travel bans for Russia.
