South America’s Pantanal region, the largest tropical wetland on Earth has been ablaze for months, roughly a quarter of the Pantanal wetlands has been destroyed, making it the worst wildfire in decades.

28 per cent of the floodplain has been consumed by the fire, the flames releasing heat-trapping gases which stretches across parts of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.

Pantanal, home to thousands of endangered species, is a carbon sink, which helps stabilize the climate.
