Although Prime Minister Scott Morrison had voiced his intent to use an upcoming global leaders’ climate ambition summit to “correct mistruths” about the Australian governments’ climate commitments, it is unlikely he will be given a speaking opportunity at the summit.

While some media outlets have predicted a speaking slot would be used to confirm Australia’s commitment to the 2030 Paris agreement, United Nations adviser Bill Hare has stated his view that an Australian representative won’t speak at the summit, citing general confusion about the government’s stance on climate change.

The speaking slots are being offered to countries who set ambitious goals to cut greenhouse gas emissions that are supported by long-term strategies and commitments, something Australia is being recognised as having failed to do.
