A private Chinese company is planning to build a new city on the Papua New Guinean island of Daru, only about 124 miles from the Australian mainland.

The new city aims to include an industrial zone, a business and commercial zone, a residential area, a resort and a seaport sprawling out over an area of 40 miles.

Former PNG government adviser Jeffrey Wall suggested to the ABC, Australian’s should be alarmed at the potential for conflict in the Torres Strait. Wall said despite the plan to build a fishery industrial park, the motive is being questioned due to the vulnerability of the location which could be open to drug smuggling and human trafficking.
