Queensland Police are set to introduce new measures to crack down on youth crime in Cairns.

The initiatives include creating a special unit which will focus on property crime and high-risk repeat offenders.

Cairns will also be the first location in Queensland to implement a program placing police support officers in schools to identify and support at-risk youths.

Police Minister Mark Ryan says the reforms have been made to address crimes comitted by ‘hardcore’, repeat offenders. According to Mr Ryan, this group makes up just 10 percent of all offenders but are responsible for half of crimes committed.
