- Efficient Space roll deep on the archives. From legendary left-field dance comps Midnight Spares and 3AM Spares to First Nations' proto-electro classic Waak Waak ga Min Min to the current release Oz Echoes, you could think of the label more as sonic anthropology. This is the work of music obsessives who can't stop digging for the weirdest and most surprising nuggets from the history of Australia's underground and DIY scene.

This current one leans electronic: from early industrial to dub, dance, and wacky doof. This a record where you can practically hear the hypercolour mohawks, stick'n'poke tatts and jangling face piercings.

Community radio listeners will know this already more than their commercial cousins, but the local underground scene in the '80s was wildly fertile. There were a bunch of talented punks playing around with all the new toys that the explosion in consumer electronics was throwing out into the world, experimenting with the new palette provided by early samplers, synths and drum machines.

It's pretty insider though, more of an impress-your-friends kinda record than the dancefloor-focussed Spares series, and more of a tasting plate of styles rather than a smooth, unifed listen.

So let Efficient Space be that freaky friend who knows all the obscure, cool sounds you would never find on your own. Get around Oz Echoes and celebrate some of the weirdos who rocked mohawks and flouro makeup the first time around.
