17 people are dead in Colombia after days of violent protests against a now-scrapped tax reform which would have seen a sales tax imposed on utilities and some food products. Riot police and military personnel deployed to control protestors are being criticised for using excessive force contributing to the death toll. President Ivan Duque withdrew the controversial new law after outcry from both lawmakers and the Colombian people but insisted reforms were still necessary to stabilise the country’s economy.
