Hong Kong democracy activist, Joshua Wong has been sentenced an additional ten months for participating in a gathering to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

Last year was the first time the annual 4 June vigil was banned in Hong Kong, with authorities citing COVID restrictions on group gatherings.

Wong, who is already in prison due to another illegal assembly conviction, was among 47 activists facing charges under the city’s national security law.

Pro-democracy activists outside the court said they were disappointed by the sentence, urging their 4 June rally was a peaceful assembly.

The vigil is expected to remain banned this year.
