NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is beginning its journey home after collecting 200 to 400 grams of a mix of loose, unconsolidated rock from an asteroid.
The return voyage will take the robotic spacecraft two years to travel 2.3 billion kilometres.
It will be the biggest cosmic haul for the US since the Apollo moon rocks.
