The Gold Coast City Council has approved the redevelopment of the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade, despite attempts by Councillor Daphne McDonald to require the developer to reserve at least 1,000 square metres of the ground floor for use as a public arcade or gallery, "to recognise the building's social importance as a place of gathering and entertainment".

The redevelopment was also opposed by more than 7,500 people who signed an online petition in 2019, calling for the arcade to be saved.

The 14-storey residential tower will be almost 44 metres high — higher than the local height limit of 29 metres
