The Brisbane City Council has announced that electric bikes will join Brisbane's electric scooter program in July.

The council announced on Tuesday that operating companies Neuron Mobility and Beam have been granted three-year contracts for the introduction of the new bikes.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the two operators were selected for their unique safety features and technology.

""What we have seen [is that] Brisbane is Australia's leading example of the use of e-mobility, and e-scooters in particular," he said.

The scheme comes after the Council's decision to abolish the current city cycle scheme, which was subsidised by residents to the tune of $16 million over more than 10 years.

The new scheme will allow each operating company to have 1,000 e-scooters and 400 e-bikes on Brisbane Streets from July 22.
