A third Medevac refugee from the MITA detention centre has been taken to hospital this afternoon, after an ambulance attended the centre around 4.00pm, Thursday 24 June.

Two men were taken to hospital after a hunger strike a few days prior. This leaves 12 Medevac refugees on hunger strike in the MITA detention centre.

Advocates have serious concerns for one of the refugees who has been in a Northern hospital for three days. Another refugee who was hospitalised Wednesday night returned to the detention centre Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition, Ian Rintoul, says the fact people are collapsing and requiring medical intervention so early in the hunger strike is an indicator of the seriousness of the situation.
