The Queensland Council for Civil Liberties President Michael Cope has welcomed the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill, but argued for improvements.

Mr Cope says this bill is important because this reform will, “enable the relief of much pain and suffering, which is increasing as our society ages.”

However, the QCCL has proposed that the eligibility criteria, which currently only applies to those expected to die within 12 months and dealing with intolerable suffering, should be extended to those experiencing unbearable pain or suffering, with no prospect of improvement, even if they are not expected to die.
