In an open letter to the members of the World Heritage Committee, Australia’s leading environmental non-governmental organisations are urging the World Heritage Committee to add the Great Barrier Reef to the List of World Heritage 'In Danger'.

In the letter, Greenpeace, Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network and the Queensland Conservation Council and many others have outlined the damage caused to the reef due to rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification and coral bleaching incidents has failed to be addressed or managed by the Australian government over the past five years. It is hoped that adding the Great Barrier Reef to the World Heritage’s ‘In Danger’ list will force the Australian government to act.
