After a 75 year long mystery, World War II plane crash artefacts were finally uncovered.

The Catalina A24-50, also known as the flying boat, took off from Cairns on September 2, 1943 and disappeared that night along with 10 men.

The crash site had no human remains but several artefacts, including dog tags, were uncovered.

In a ceremony in Cairns on Monday, the deaths of these men were commemorated and some of the artefacts returned to their families.

The deputy director of Historic Unrecovered War Casualties Wing Commander Grant Kelly said it was a privilege to be able to provide this kind of closure to families.
