Argentina has joined Canada, New Zealand and India following the announcement they have introduced gender-neutral formal identification cards.
President Alberto Fernandez said identities other than man and woman need to be respected.
President Fernandez had been an advocate for progressive social reforms, with his government legalising abortion last year.
