Severe COVID cases are surging in Tokyo while the Olympics are going on, as the Japanese capital reported a record number of new infections.
New daily cases hit 2848 in Tokyo, exceeding 2500 for the first time since the start of the pandemic, according to Tokyo’s officials and the record comes Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in its fifth day of official competition.
More COVID infections have also been reported in the Olympic Village where most of the 11,000 athletes competing in the Olympic Games are staying. At least 160 cases have been reported as linked to the Tokyo 2020 Games as of Tuesday, according to organisers.
