Insects play an important part in our ecosystems, however their numbers are decreasing rapidly worldwide. A group of scientists from CSIRO and Australian Insect National Collection are on a mission to catalogue how many insects are out there with the help of A.I technology.

The National Insect Collection headquartered in Canberra, houses around twelve  million individual insects discovered since colonisation. By the use of A.I technology, scientists are now able to take images of tiny insects at various focal lengths to identify their species. This technology has also been found to identify species at a much faster rate than microscopes.

Scientists say not only will it identity insects yet to be discovered, but also pinpoint the difference between ones which already have a name on them.
