Anti-semitic sentiment is on the rise in Queensland, and there are calls for decades-old laws to be updated to combat the hate.

As Queensland continues to record incidents of hate towards the Jewish community, yet 9 in 10 victims remain silent, questions have arisen over the effectiveness of the state laws.

Jason Steinberg, vice-president of the Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies, is urging Queensland parliament to make it a criminal offence, with proposed penalties of up to 14 years, to behave or publish material likely to intimidate or harass others on the basis of race, religion, sexuality or gender.

Mr Steinberg ensures these reforms will protect the basic rights of all citizens, not just Jewish people.
