An iceberg the size of Greater London has “kissed” the coast of Antarctica this week, narrowly missing the UK’s Halley research station.

Scientists say the A74 iceberg made only the faintest of contacts with the coast and they have been keeping a keen eye on it recently due to the station’s uncertain survival.

The station is left unmanned in the winter months due to the high risk nature of the area making any evacuation very difficult and scientists say if the knock was any firmer the station may not have survived.
