Parliament is facing backlash for not reflecting a culturally diverse Australia.

According to the 2016 census, Asian ancestry claimed 14.4 percent of the population. Of the 227 members in federal Parliament, Asian or south-Asian heritage makes up only 2.2%.

This has prompted the need for political parties to do more to increase cultural diversity in Parliament. Tu Le, a Vietnamese Australian lawyer who was overlooked for the seat of fowler in Sydney says, “we can't keep relying on multiculturalism as this great legacy of the labor party… it’s something that needs to be continually worked upon.”
