A hailstorm hit the Gold Coast yesterday, leaving thousands without power.

The severe thunderstorms left residents seeking protection for their cars as golf-ball sized hailstones moved through the region.

Energex recorded 2,964 gold coast residents lacking power Monday afternoon with close to 1000 homes in Molendinar suffering outages also.

Meteorologist Helen Reid said the trough is helping lift the moisture and heat which is creating the storms.
