- Russian producer Kedr Livanskiy cannot be contained in her latest full length. Transforming her ambient electronica into deconstructed club, her fourth album Liminal Soul loses none of the soulful momentum that made her one to watch.

Early in Livanskiy’s career, songs like Ariadna and No More Summer Rain contested the boundaries of what contemporary ambient electronica could be, replacing cold, industrial sounds with something biotic; songs that had a heartbeat. In Liminal Soul, Livanskiy opts to channel her conscious ambient into deconstructed club, more reminiscent of Aphex Twin and Nicolas Jaar.

The tracks that feature vocals are almost an oddity among the carefully constructed production on the record. The vocals transform the more subtly produced moments into dynamic Russian pop songs that feel bright and angelic. Your Turn featuring Russian musician Flaty, is a striking selection from the record, a track which oozes ‘80’s sheen, not a far cry from the work of Robyn or Ray of Light era Madonna. It’s contrasted by the edgy Badlands, a track which in fairness, is much sweeter than it appears on the surface.

Other cuts on the record experiment with vocals as much as production. My Invisible features arpeggiated synthesisers and pitched vocals alike. Though the tracks on this record don’t blend into one another, as IDM often does, there’s a beauty in the transitions between the contrasting moments As My Invisible fades into the crackling, distorted bass that opens Boy, it’s hard to be anything other than impressed at the stark flickering production and borderline Zola Jesus operatic vocals.

With each record Kedr Livanskiy’s sound grows in sophistication. Her fourth record Liminal Soul is like the last blaze of light before sunset. It contains the stillness of the afternoon sun, and echoes of raves soon to commence.
