Electric cars and home batteries are posing a waste problem in Australia as several product recalls indicate a need for a national plan for dealing with renewable energy waste.

Hyundai has pulled the batteries from almost 1000 electric cars from the Australian market as part of a global recall with concerns they may lead to an electrical short and start a fire.

The company confirmed that the batteries are going to Melbourne recycler EcoBatt who aim to dismantle and recycle.

However, EcoBatt’s Founder Doug Rowe says the process is risky.

He says, "It is a new and high-risk business when not done with the correct safety equipment, and few know the best way to handle and process these batteries."
