Australian of the year, Grace Tame, is among a multitude of influential Tasmanians who are calling on the state government to raise the age of responsibility to at least 14.

Currently the age of responsibility in Tasmania is 10, an age Former Premier Lara Giddings says is “too low”.

The joint letter says a child of that age is still developing and lacks reasoning skills and consequential thinking.

The United Nations considers 14 the absolute minimum age of responsibility. However, the Australian government resisted the United Nations Human Rights Council’s recommendation to raise the age to 14 earlier this year.
