Experts are claiming lyrebirds are damaging Tasmania's forests following an explosion in population throughout the state's wetlands.

The birds, best known for their mimicking abilities, were introduced to Tasmania in the 1930s and 1940s as it was believed the mainland population was under threat.

Dr Eric Woehler from Birdlife Tasmania says not enough was known about the species and the ecological impact.

Lyrebirds are known for drying out leaf litter while looking for food which Dr Woehler says Tasmania is already drying out, and these birds are drying out the litter even more rapidly.
