Experts are calling for Australia’s state governments to ban cigarette sales and other tobacco products from Australian supermarkets.

Researchers from the University of Queensland say Australia needs to address the supply side of tobacco consumption as combating the issue through laws and health warnings are no longer enough.

Tobacco health expert Coral Gartner says, “Most international governments, including Australia are lagging behind the significant public support for ending tobacco retailing.”

Dr Gartner said setting a specific date for the end of cigarette sales in Australia would make it easier for people to quit smoking and allow for the government to plan for reductions in tobacco tax revenue.
