Woolloongabba Greens Councillor Jonathan Sri has proposed a trial of new 30kph speed limits in West End, in an effort to improve safety and convenience for public transport users and encourage a shift away from car dependence.

While Cr Sri cited a number of cities around the world currently adopting similar speed limits in metropolitan areas, his proposal was met with backlash from Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who labelled the proposal a socialist push.

Cr Schrinner further opposed the plea for the speed limit trial by accusing the greens of punishing motorists, and believes that the current 40kph limit is appropriate.
