QLD Greens MP Michael Berkman has filed a complaint in regards to a number of ‘deeply concerning’ social media posts allegedly made by QLD prison officers.

The comments were made by individuals on a Facebook post made by the page of the Together Queensland Prison Officers’ Union about a riot at the Capricornia Correction Centre in Rockhampton and according to Berkman, ‘include descriptions of incidents inside correctional centers with details that appear to breach confidentiality.’

The comments, which appear to have not been endorsed by the union as they have since been removed, called for the use of violence against ‘maggot’ inmates, calling prisoners ‘filth’ and ‘junkys’.

The Greens MP, along with demanding an inquiry by the state government,  took to twitter to call for changes to the state’s parole system to deal with the issue of overcrowding in QLD prisons stating that: ‘This is what happens when you pursue vile "tough on crime" politics & lock vulnerable people up in a system that treats their lives as somehow less valuable.’
