A NASA spacecraft has officially touched the sun for the first time, plunging through the solar atmospheric region known as the corona.

Exploring this magnetically intense region up close can help scientists better understand solar outbursts that can interfere with life on Earth.

The pass through occurred back in April but the scientists on the project have said it took a few months for them to receive the data, and then several more months to confirm it.

The solar probe dubbed Parker will keep drawing ever closer to the sun until its final orbit in 2025.
