The Turkmenistan President is ordering what's known as the ‘gates of hell’ to be extinguished.
The gas crater which opened up in the early 70s in Darvaza has been burning for decades.
It is believed a soviet drilling operation went awry in 1971, and the gas field was intentionally set alight in the 1980s to stop the spread of methane.
President Berdimuhamedow says, “We are losing valuable natural resources for which we could get significant profits and use them for improving the well-being of our people."
