US President Joe Biden has made an impassioned speech on protecting voting rights in the US, calling for Senate rules to be changed to make election laws easier to pass.

Biden’s attempts to pass legislation to expand access to the polls and prevent the suppression of minority votes have been hampered by a parliamentary maneuver known as the filibuster, which changes the requirement for a bill to pass from a simple majority to a supermajority (or 60/100 votes).

Biden’s called the fight to pass substantive voting rights legislation ‘a battle for the soul of America’ in a speech in Atlanta, Georgia.

‘The right to vote and have that vote counted is Democracy’s Threshold of Liberty; without it, nothing is possible, with it everything is possible’ he went on to say.
