The United States and its NATO allies have begun efforts to sure up military commitments in the Baltics and Eastern Europe as tensions with Russia over Ukraine reach a fever pitch.

Thousands of US troops are on high alert, France has offered to send troops to Romania, Spain is sending a frigate to the Black Sea and Denmark is sending fighter jets to Lituania in an effort to send a signal to Allies of the region that NATO would protect them from Russian aggression.

Notably absent from military support for Eastern Europe is Germany, which has, post-WW2 remained reluctant to lead Europe on security matters and has remained hesitant to provoke Russia out of fear of retaliation.
