It’s said that art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. At the Brisbane leg of Wafia’s Flowers and Superpowers tour, the electro-pop artist washed the dust off traditional culture.

Born in the Netherlands, the 24-year old Iraqi-Syrian now calls Brisbane home. After leaving her studies in bio-medicine and her relationship to pursue a musical career, she truly embodies the message of her songs, which inspire people to follow happiness over social obligation. At her Sunday night homecoming, Wafia passed on to all those who attended her belief in self-love and in having a go. The spectacle was flawless  a high-energy hour that uplifted the packed Triffid with songs such as Hurts and Meet Me In The Middle.

If there was one takeaway from this show, it was to resist the push and pull of modern life. Wafia’s worldview is one where pursuing dreams is more important than regurgitating social and family norms. She’s both an example of an indie artist shining light onto the pop landscape, and a social leader, daring enough to knock the dust off the established norms.
