Australian vegan catering market growing

Vegan and vegetarian catering options have increased across Australia to match demand.

Plant based catering options have become more widely available in restaurants and food delivery services as Australia’s vegan market is the third fastest growing in the world.

Roy Morgan research indicates that since 2014 the rate of Australians consuming a mostly or entirely plant based diet has increased by 11.2 per cent.

Tensions rise between US, Saudi Arabia and Iran after oil conflict

United States President Donald Trump has threatened Iran ‘with official end’ to a brewing potential war following attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil installations and tankers.

Saudi Arabia responded, saying that it wants to avoid war in the region, however, stands ready following last week’s attacks, and will respond with all force and determination to defend itself and its interests should war break out.

The Netherlands wins 2019 Eurovision

The Netherlands have taken out the top prize in the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv over the weekend.

Duncan Laurence’s emotional piano-heavy power-ballad ‘Arcade’, was tipped as a favourite before the competition began, and proved popular with audiences and critics alike, putting him 27 points above the second-place winner, Italy.

The Netherlands last won the annual competition 44 years ago and will play host the to the international musical spectacle in 2020.

Outreach clinic for high school students, first of its kind in Australia

The University of Queensland and Marsden State High School have partnered up to establish a psychology outreach clinic for high school students.

The clinic is the first of its kind in Australia and is available to current Marsden State school students.

Head of UQ School of Psychology, Professor Virginia Slaughter, said that having the clinic is important as adolescence is a time of great change and an entails an array of physical, social, emotional and academic challenges.

New virtual reality app realeased

The Queensland Government have released a new virtual reality app designed to give the public a sneak-peek at the North Queensland Stadium.

The app was developed by the project’s principal consultant Cox Architecture and the Department of Housing and Public Works, and showcases the design through a diorama-style image that users can rotate on their mobile devices.

Canberra city in under 10 minutes with light rail

A Canberra construction company is selling apartments with claims to buyers that they can get to the city via light rail in under 10 minutes despite no finalised route by the ACT Government.

Construction Geocon is promoting their Grand Central Towers in Woden describing them as an extraordinary opportunity for Canberrans to jump on the light rail and be in the city under 10 minutes.

The ACT Government did not yet confirm the transport project and claims it was never briefed also considering to introduce new regulations in advertising standards.

 

Life expectancy rates slowing down

A new report has found the rise of obesity to be linked to a decrease in life expectancy rates for Australians.

From 1981 to 2003, Australia experienced an increase in life expectancy due to the push to quit smoking however, in recent years there has been a slowdown.

The report said that poorer dietary habits such as higher sugar and calorie intake and their effects on health including diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure are to blame for the deceleration.

Hypersonic flight to become a reality

Chinese researchers have developed a new material that would allow hypersonic flight to become a reality, according to new Chinese media reports.

Objects travelling at hypersonic speed - over five times the speed of sound - need to be made of materials that can withstand the high temperatures caused by friction.

The newly developed material can withstand temperatures of up to 3000°C for several hours, and is now in production for aviation, space and defence uses.

European protesters oppose populism and nationalism

European protesters are opposing right-wing populism and nationalist parties prior to upcoming election to be held between May 23 and May 26.

Marches occurred in many major cities such as Berlin and Budapest under banners like “One Europe for Everyone: Your Voice Against Nationalism” and “no to hate, yes to change”.
