More than 300 yaks stranded in India's snow

Heavy snowfall on the India-China border has hindered rescue efforts and left hundred of Yaks stranded since December, with at least 300 having already died from starvation, and 50 others in need of immediate medical attention.

 

The tragedy is unprecedented, with between 10 and 15 yaks on average dying in similar conditions in the Mukuthand valley each year.

 

Torres Strait Islander groups take climate change issues to UN

Torres Strait Island groups say they are losing their homes to rising sea levels and are filing an official complaint against Prime Minister Scott Morrison to the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

Environmental law charity ClientEarth supports the groups and says a complaint such as this one will be the first of its kind against the Australian Government’s alleged current lack of efforts to tackle climate change.

The ABC has used its current vote compass data to reveal Australia’s most left and right leaning electorates across the nation alongside other key findings. Analysing over 450 thousand Vote Compass respondents positions on economic and social issues.

The most right-leaning, or conservative, electorate in the country is Maranoa in rural Queensland, a seat held by the Liberal National Party with the most left-leaning being Cooper, a formerly working-class but now gentrified seat in Melbourne, currently held by Labor.

Northern Territory welfare groups push for restrictions on alcohol products

Welfare groups in the Northern Territory are pushing for restrictions on the sale of household products containing alcohol after sales have spiked in the past three months.

 

Advocates believe the increase may be due to the growth of the Banned Drinker Register, resulting in more people resorting to other means to get alcohol.

 

National program recycles food into valuable products

A university researcher is leading a new national program to transform food waste into valuable products.

The program led by Dr Paul Luckman is looking at turning food water into supplements, fuelling sustainable wastewater treatment with food waste, and finding technology gaps.

Dr Luckman says the program is hoping to save 87 gigalitres of water through recovery and reuse, reduce 30 million tonnes in food waste and save at least 44 million tonnes of greenhouse gases emitted over 10 years.

Scientists from the University of Queensland believe deep sea fish are sensitive to the colour of fish shines in dimly-lit lights.

 

UQ scientists are still examining the genomes of 101 fish species and how they are continuing these genes as a survival weapon in deep water areas.
