Stonehenge potentially under threat with new tunnel construction

Plans for a $3 billion tunnel under Stonehenge have garnered widespread criticism amid fears they may cause “considerable damage” to the prehistoric wonder.

The British Government announced plans to plunge a two kilometre tunnel underneath the World Heritage site, replacing the A303 highway connecting London with south-west England.

A recent United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) report said the proposal is “not adequate to protect the authenticity, integrity and outstanding universal value of the property.”

First non-illustrated black hole image unveiled

Scientists will unveil the first ever image of a black hole.

The photo is expected to be released during a press conference held on Wednesday night (Australian time) and will be the first non-illustrated image ever of a black hole.

The US National Science Foundation have labelled it “a groundbreaking result” from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project.

 

Labor Government accuses PM of deliberate election delay

The Labor Government has accused the Liberal party of deliberately delaying the Australian federal election.

Labor Leader Bill Shorten accused Prime Minister Scott Morrison of delaying the announcement so the LNP can continue using public funds for advertising campaigns.

Unless PM Morrison announces the election next Monday, the Australian Electoral Commission said we won’t be headed to the polls between May 18th and May 25th.

Queensland increasing solar panel systems

Queensland households are increasing their use of solar panel systems by adding battery storage, with more than 2500 homes being approved for solar panel grants and loans.

At the current market rate, the home battery storage setups will take at least 10 years to pay off, but Energex and Energy Queensland say the systems will help pay for themselves in the long run.

According to the Queensland Household Energy Survey, one third of Queensland solar-panel owners plan to add a battery to their current solar setup within the next decade.

PM in Brisbane to discuss budget

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will be in Brisbane at a business lunch to discuss the impact of the budget for Queensland.

Pro-environment organisations such as Stop Adani and the Australian Youth Climate Coalition are rallying at Fortitude Valley today to protest Scott Morrison’s views on climate change and coal mining.

The event is expected to make a statement following the recent strike for climate change in Brisbane, and protests against the alleged climate change denial of the Liberal-National government.

NASA cancels all-female spacewalk as suits not suitable

NASA has cancelled the first all-female spacewalk that was planned for this Friday.

The organisation claimed lack of available space suits for the International Space Station fitted for women.

Astronaut Jessica Mounts said the equipment she has worn is mostly designed for men and is calling for clothing accommodating women.

Although, she said NASA is currently improving their clothing technologies, this pace change is “slow”.

Brunei luxury hotels shut down social media following anti-LGBT laws backlash

Many Brunei-owned luxury hotels have deleted their social media accounts, following international backlash regarding the country’s anti-LGBT laws and a boycott movement.

The boycott movement was led by celebrities such as George Clooney and Ellen DeGeneres after Brunei introduced laws that would see gay sex punishable by flogging or stoning to death.
