Shorten closes gap as preferred PM

The coalition continues to trail Labor on a two-party preferred basis while Labor leader Bill Shorten has narrowed the gap as preferred leader in the latest Newspoll.

The national poll of 1731 voters was conducted between December 6-9.

The poll reveals Mr Shorten has gained two points to 36 per cent as preferred prime minister, while current Prime Minister Scott Morrison dropped two points to 44 per cent.

Experts warned of 'permanent damage' from $1.3b Cleveland harbour project

Changes suggested for a $1.4-billion-dollar project to redevelop Cleveland's Toondah Harbour do not go far enough to protect internationally recognised wetlands, the Australian Conservation Foundation says.

Documents obtained by the ABC made clear the department rejected the 2017 application from Walker Group Holdings, because it would cause “permanent and irreversible damage” to the wetlands.

Underwood Middle-Eastern bakery to help refugees to start new lives

Chef and Syrian refugee George Tabbakh is getting a second chance to share his food and culture with the opening of Middle Eastern-themed Abboud Bakery, in Brisbane’s south-east.

The third-generation baker left his family bakery behind in his war-torn country, and with the help of Brisbane lawyer Angelo Anthony and Coco Bliss franchisee Gus KA-KOOSH, he will make Lebanese bread and Middle Eastern treats in Underwood.
