Ballarat residents refuse federal government's apology

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has summarised the practices under Catholic institutions; however, certain victims throughout Ballarat are refusing to accept the federal government’s reparations.

Certain survivor’s have dismissed Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s national apology, dismissing them as “hollow” due to inconsistent reporting laws.  

Independent candidate Kerryn Phelps predicted to win the Wentworth by-election

Independent candidate Kerryn Phelps is predicted to win the Wentworth by-election, a seat held by the Liberal Party since the 1940s.

Phelps currently has a lead of over 1600 votes after preferences, with a swing against Liberal Candidate Dave Sharma by up to 19 per cent.

Postal votes are continued to be tallied, as well as voting booths recounted to ensure accuracy.

Storms in SE Queensland forced flight delay in Brisbane Airport

Yesterday’s widespread storms throughout South East Queensland saw Brisbane Airport forced to delay or cancel domestic flights.

As the Bureau of Meteorology has observed “golf ball sized hail” , residents throughout the region were urged to stay safe.

Flash flooding was also observed in Toowoomba, along with sparks from power lines.

More thunderstorms are predicted for Brisbane CBD and surrounding regions this afternoon and tonight.

Logan water system clear of bacteria

Logan City Council has lifted a ban on drinking water put in place on Thursday after traces of the faecal bacteria E. coli was found in the water supply.

The ban, which applied to residents of Cedar Vale, Woodhill, Veresdale and Veresdale Scrub, was lifted at 12pm yesterday.

Council has not said how the bacteria got into the water supply in Logan, but spent two days testing pipes in the area before giving the all clear today.

I first attended and simultaneously reviewed Women In Voice in 2017, and was delighted to come across a range of female vocalists, and a theatrical show, with a hilarious host that continuously kept it fun and exciting for the audience.

 

PM says Liberals likely to lose Wentworth

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the Liberal candidate in the Wentworth by-election is likely to lose to independent Dr Kerryn Phelps.

Dave Sharma would be the first conservative candidate to lose the electorate, which has been held by the Liberal party and its predecessors since Federation.

Dr Phelps has previously indicated she would guarantee confidence and supply to the Morrison government, however when given the opportunity yesterday she did not reaffirm this position.  

Queensland Greens call for 1% caps on rent increases

The only Greens MP in Queensland Michael Berkman is calling for rent caps of 1% per year to be introduced to the state’s rental laws.

Mr Berkman said lack of lease security in Queensland, as well as rising prices, are leading to more people out on the street, and that without rent caps, landlords would be able to jack up prices to effectively evict people without sound reason.

Syria's Jordan border reopens for first time in seven years

The Syrian-Jordan border has reopened after seven years due to civil war, while Israel has reopened their Syrian border crossing in the Golan Heights.

Around 670,000 registered Syrian refugees live in Jordan, and the Jordan Government says while they aren’t putting on any direct pressure, the refugees must eventually return to Syria.

The Syrian Government points to the border openings as evidence that it is close to winning the civil war and achieving stability.

NASA launches podcast

NASA has launched a new podcast this week called ‘The Invisible Network,’ which will embrace the human aspect of space exploration.

The podcast also focuses on bringing space technology, that is typically overlooked, into the spotlight.

Some integral equipment is seldom discussed, such as communicators and trackers, simply because they aren’t visible to the naked eye.
