Wildlife carer attacked by Kangaroo

A Queensland wildlife carer has horrific injuries after being attacked by a kangaroo.

 

Linda Smith, 64, had a collapsed lung, broken ribs, cuts and other injuries after a 183cm kangaroo attacked her after she stepped in to stop it hurting her husband near Millmerran on Saturday night.

 

Inquest into teenagers death

Today will see the first of three inquests into three deaths of teenagers who took their own life following the 2014 closure of the Barrett Adolescent Centre.

 

Closed by the Liberal National Party, the facility provided care for Brisbane’s young people with mental illness. The deaths took place 8 months after the closure.

 

The inquest will begin in the Coroners Court and will run for three days, along with a joint hearing into the deaths will be held in December.

 

Headspace funding to increase

The Federal government will increase funding to Headspace by an estimated 50 per cent next financial year.

 

Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the announcement, suggesting that it “will make a big difference in young people’s lives.”

$51.8 million in extra funding is announced for 2019-2020, with a large portion of that going towards online services. The remaining millions will go towards the existing 107 Headspace centres, with 95 million already supplied to the organisation.

Supermarkets slammed over drought relief promotion

Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has launched an attack on Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, suggesting that customers are being misled by a 30c surcharge on milk to support drought stricken farmers.

 

Littleproud claims that the surcharge is an “empty media stunt”, as it only is applied to the supermarket variety, and not branded milk.

 

Hurricane Michael hits US hard

 

18 have died with figures likely to increase from Hurricane Michael hitting Florida and surrounding US states.

 

Over 370,000 have been forced to evacuated from the Gulf Coast, seeing the biggest storm to hit Florida since the 1800s.

 

Almost 8000 are currently spread across 100 centres throughout Florida, Georgia and Alabama.  

Storm in Nepal claims 9 lives

A group of five South Korean climbers and four Nepali climbers and porters has been reported missing after a storm hit a camp on a Himalayan peak in west Nepal.

 

Tourism Ministry official Rameshwar Niraula said the storm, originally perceived as an avalanche, struck the group at the base camp, destroying the camp area.

 

Brisbane ID scanner's under-perform

Government ordered ID scanners in Brisbane catch just one banned drinker for every 26,000 licences checked in the first year of the program.

 

Data obtained by the ABC revealed 12.8 million IDs were scanned since the start of the program in July 2017, and of that, 488 people were found trying to going into a bar or club from which they had been banned.

 

Torres Strait Islanders to develop legislation

Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders will help to develop new legislation that officially recognises traditional Torres Strait Islander child rearing practices.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Jackie Trad said that “Developing legislation to recognise traditional child rearing practices will be a historic step, not only for the Torres Strait but for Queensland and Australia.”

 

Red Cross to hear Nauru concerns

Concerns about Australia's treatment of asylum seekers on Nauru will be raised when the head of the International Red Cross visits Canberra this week.

 

International Committee for the Red Cross president Peter Maurer will confidentially report on the situation on Manus Island and Nauru, where Australia has sent asylum seekers who arrived by boat.

 

He also urged Australians to support governments giving money to international aid organisations.
