Wild pigs pose greater risk to climate change than cars
A joint research project between UQ and the University of Canterbury found wild pigs to commit far greater damage to the climate than a million cars.
Researchers say when wild pigs plough through soil to find food, carbon is released to the atmosphere. Researchers said soil contains three times as much carbon, and has the potential to accelerate climate change.
World War II plane crash uncovered and commemorated
After a 75 year long mystery, World War II plane crash artefacts were finally uncovered.
The Catalina A24-50, also known as the flying boat, took off from Cairns on September 2, 1943 and disappeared that night along with 10 men.
The crash site had no human remains but several artefacts, including dog tags, were uncovered.
In a ceremony in Cairns on Monday, the deaths of these men were commemorated and some of the artefacts returned to their families.
Passing of acclaimed TV actress Mary Ward
Acclaimed TV actress and announcer Mary Ward has passed away in a Melbourne aged care facility yesterday.
Most known for her role as ‘Mum’ Jeanette Brooks in the Prisoner series, Ward appeared in over 20 television series and six major films in a career which spanned over seven decades.
Ward was also a pioneer, being the first ever female announcer on the Australian Broadcasting Commission. She was 106.

An army of volunteers leads defense and cleanup efforts after deadly riots in South Africa.
The protest and violence engulfed Johannesburg and Durban after the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma on July 7th.
Over the weekend stores that weren't ransacked rationed food, gasoline and other supplies to stretch out stock, residents remain on guard keeping checkpoints manned and about three dozen volunteers have been methodically sweeping up debris.
At least 212 people were killed and over 2,000 arrested.

Object spotted across Queensland night sky
An object streaked across Queensland’s night sky on Sunday, with several eyewitness reports and multiple videos capturing the spectacle.
While the nature of the object is still unconfirmed, the event fell right in the middle of the annual delta aquariid meteor shower, with the perseids meteor shower also due to cross the night sky next month.
Petition to name Ipswich bridge after local legend
An online petition launched by an Ipswich woman aimed to rename Paul Pisasale Bridge in Ipswich.
Hitting over 1200 signatures on change.org, the petition wants to the bridge to be renamed to Ash Barty Bridge, who is considered a local legend.
Last year, the newly elected Ipswich City Council considered renaming certain landmarks named after former councillors.
Gold Coast woman breached isolation conditions
A woman undergoing hotel quarantine on the Gold Coast breached her isolation conditions after receiving cigarettes via a flying drone.
A man is believed to have operated the drone from outside the Crowne Plaza at Broadbeach last Sunday. The sneaky exchange was spotted by a hotel staff member who notified police, and interviewed the quarantining women.
Police gave the women a $1300 fine for the stunt.
Nations engaging with illegal fishing labelled as 'thieves' by PM
Prime Minister Scott Morrison labelled nations engaging in illegal fishing as ‘thieves’ during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Pacific Island leaders.
Scott Morrison said “For Australia, as an island, the Blue Pacific is critically important, it drives our economies and supports life in the Pacific… it is absolutely vital we protect them from those thieves who would come and steal it from you”.
The leaders also talked about protecting and managing oceans and how nations are working to tackle climate change.
Sydney's lockdown doubling in cost
The swift ban on most construction, repair and renovation work in Great Sydney is expected to double the cost of Sydney’s lockdown.
The Commonwealth Bank’s head of Australian economics has estimated the economic hit to cost between $1 to $2 billion per week, which is 0.4 percent of the nation’s GDP.
Builders urged the government to shorten shutdowns for large scale projects, as projects are put into serious disarray when lockdown time are lengthened due to time and costs .
