US set to donate 500 million Covid vaccines

United States President, Joe Biden, said the US will donate 500 million doses of the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine around the world in an attempt to speed up the end of the pandemic.

The announcement came before the G7 summit, which is due to be held in the United Kingdom.

Biden has denied speculation there are strings attached to the donations, saying it is the responsibility of the wealthy countries to vaccinate the world and that this is in every country’s best interest.

Help needed for Brisbane's live music industry

Fortitude Valley’s QMusic has called upon the state government to invest money into Brisbane’s live music industry after Townsville’s state of origin match.

The closure of international borders until 2022 along with the flexible state borders, has seen the live music industry brought to its knees.

QMusic called on the Queensland government to offer a similar $24 million financial support package to the one the New South Wales government recently gave to live music venues.

Pilot plan for welcoming back international students

Under a new pilot plan, the New South Wales government plans to allow two hundred and fifty international students into Sydney each fortnight from the middle of this year.

The students will spend their quarantine period in purpose-built student accommodation before commencing the second semester of their university studies.

The proposed plan has support from state police, health, and all universities, and is under review by the Federal government.

Call for NATO to be a 'nuclear free alliance'

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons released a new report which calls for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to end its reliance on nuclear weapons.

It asked NATO to enter into the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons which was founded in January of this year.

The report wants NATO to become a ‘non-nuclear alliance’ and maintains that there is no legal barrier for countries to enter into the treaty.

Brisbane Bus Commuters Benefit From Victoria Bridge Closure

The council says thousands of bus commuters are benefiting from Victoria Bridge closing to the general car traffic.

Some drivers travelling through the CBD have longer travel times as a consequence. 

Four months after the Victoria Bridge closure, The Council’s infrastructure Committee was presented with new data showing the number of vehicles on Edward and Elizabeth street had decreased by between fifteen-nineteen percent. 

But Traffic on the William Jolly Bridge has seen an average weekly volume increase of nine percent. 

Immediate Queensland Lockdown Is Unlikely

The Queesland government says an immediate lockdown is off the cards, after the state reported one new local coronavirus case today, the husband of a COVID19 positive woman who travelled from Melbourne. 

The couple is believed to be at the end of their infectious period, easing some concerns raised yesterday about the potential for the virus to spread in Queensland.

The Yuggera Ugarapul land defenders will stage a protest today from 12:45pm at Frasers Property Brisbane office to prevent planned developments and to return land to its rightful owners. 

Frasers Property is one of three developers who are planning to develop the land around Deebing Creek despite strong opposition from the Yuggera Ugarapul  traditional owners for whom Elders and supporters have camped there to resist the development for several years.
