Australian Worker's Mental Health and Wellbeing Improves
The nation's largest workplace mental health study reveals nearly 3 in 5 Australian workers have experienced a mental health condition this year, increasing 9% from 2019.
Despite this the overall Mental Health and Wellbeing Score increased nearly two-and-a-half points to 65.1 out of 100.
Margo Lydon from SuperFriend says the overall improvement is surprising, despite the challenges of COVID-19.
Queensland Stadiums Lose Patrons
Stadiums across Queensland recorded 1.6 million fewer patrons this year and suffered a loss of $9 million due to the impact of coronavirus.
Stadiums Queensland’s annual report was presented to Parliament last week and noted that the cost of managing events rose due to the increased safety and hygiene requirements.
Queensland is beginning to reopen stadiums and will host the first major sports games in the nation since lockdown.
UQ Develops Rapid COVID-19 Test
University of Queensland researchers have developed low-tech solutions to test for a range of diseases that could cheaply and quickly detect COVID-19.
The team from the University of Queensland has developed a low-cost "dipstick" made from strips of cellulose and wax that can isolate genetic material in thirty seconds.
The material is then run through a field-sample analyser made from a travel coffee mug which can take up to 40 minutes.
Various Artists: The Art Of Hibernation
- As we all know, the restrictions on physical gatherings resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic has been quite a challenge for musicians. Another side of this though, one perhaps less obvious, is the way this has affected the places where live music is a vital part of the social glue.

QLD border clock to reset after COVID case spike
While many are preparing for the gradual opening of the Queensland-New South Wales border, three new cases of COVID-19 found in New South Wales may postpone that even further.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had initially proposed the border would begin opening on November 1st if New South Wales could reach a 28-day benchmark of no community transmission COVID-19 cases.
Queensland study finds new preventative measures against tumours
The Queensland Institute of Medical Research Berghofer has released findings from a new study on the causes of skin tumours, suggesting that alcohol and tobacco can be as dangerous as the sun when it comes to skin cancers.
The study is the largest of its kind, involving over 40,000 Queenslanders and spanning four years, yet the advice gleaned from it is shockingly simple.
Coalition allocates $46m to Aboriginal community organisations
The Coalition has come under criticism for allocating only $46 million to Aboriginal community-controlled organisations in the 2020-2021 Federal Budget.
The money is set to support Aboriginal community groups to reach Close The Gap targets, but Indigenous groups are criticising the budget for being too small to stretch over the next four years.
With the decision to also allocate $39 million to a non-Indigenous sports initiative for boys, the Coalition is facing further backlash for not budgeting appropriately for both Indigenous boys and girls.
Breakthrough in treatment for motor neurone disease
A team of researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne have made a breakthrough in developing treatment for motor neuron disease, a deadly neurodegenerative disease.
While the condition is incurable, lead researcher Seth Masters’ animal studies of the treatment have suggested it could lead to longer life expectancy and slow down progression of the disease.
