Fuel discount sparks massive queue and traffic chaos at Queensland servo

The offer of 50c-a-litre fuel has proved too tempting for many Queenslanders, with an estimated three kilometre line-up of cars banking up on a major road outside a service station south of Brisbane.

The Puma Energy at Woodridge in Logan offered the significant discount from 11am to 12pm on Friday as part of a promotion.

Bob Prasad, who owns MC's Indian grocer on Kingston Road, said he could see the "bumper to bumper" traffic banked up long past his business which is about a kilometre away from the service station.

 

Sandtunes Festival 2019 Has Been Cancelled

The startup festival named SandTunes - headlined by Travis Scott, Logic and Carly Rae Jepsen has been cancelled.

The Queensland "festival on the beach" was set to take place at the end of November at the Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium (after moving locations from Coolangatta Beach), but promoters, have confirmed that the weekender will not be going ahead.

Newcastle Nursing Home Caught Drugging Residents Without Consent

An investigation run by the Federal Department of Health issued a non-compliance notice to the Bayside Aged Care Facility in Bonnells Bay, as it was seen to not meet the standard protocols for health, personal, clinical care, and hygiene.

This followed an audit report by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, which found that residents' right to respectful care was being compromised by staff breaches in privacy and dignity.  

Canberra to go 'car-free' for a day in 2020

Canberra looks likely to commit to a car-free day next year, joining cities like Paris, Mexico City and Jakarta in closing off the city to vehicles for World Car Free Day.

The Conservation Council wants the ACT Government to commit to a car-free day before the next election. 

Some have criticised the move saying 20,000 commuters will be affected. 

Since the city moved to 100 per cent renewable-sourced electricity, the vast majority of its emissions have come from transport — nearly all private vehicles.

 

Bolivian President Evo Morales has announced his resignation

In Breaking News, Bolivian President Evo Morales has announced his resignation.

Mr Morales, was in power since 2006, and declared the winner of presidential voting on October 20 by a narrow margin. It gave him a controversial fourth term.

But the opposition said there was fraud in the vote count, and three weeks of street protests ensued, during which three people died and hundreds were injured.

 

North Korea Facing Crop Shortages in Drought

The Swiss-based GEO Global Agricultural Monitoring Initiative, or Geoglam, have used satellite images to disclose how drought has damaged crops around North Korea- with the main harvest provinces estimated to have produced a below-average output.

Irregular rainfall and low reservoir levels during Summer have led to a worsening of the nation's overall food situation- with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation stating that poor harvests in September resulted in 10 million people needing urgent assistance. 

Proposals for Five New Brisbane Bridge

The Brisbane City Council has proposed 5 new bridges for the city but their efforts to complete the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade have casted doubt over their plan. 

The Lord Mayor says the bridges will be green, including a proposed Kangaroo Point pedestrian bridge between Thornton St and Edward St in the city.

Labor’s Patrick Condren has slammed the announcement after Kingsford Smith was delayed by a year and costs blew out by at least $47 million.  

Brisbane Petrol Prices Highest in the Country

The RACQ says Petrol prices in Brisbane are still the highest of capital cities. 

The recent price hike is being blamed on a shorter price-cycle, which saw October’s average fuel price for regular unleaded at 154.9 ($1.54) a litre.

Motorists are recommended to shop around before filling up, with the largest retailers usually the first to put up prices while many independent fuel stations keep their prices lower for longer. 

Illegal Offshore Gambling Websites to be Blocked by Aus Government

The Federal Government  has announced strengthening legislations which will allow the Australian Communications and Media Authority or ACMA, to access and block illegal betting websites.

This is a response to an abundance of citizen complaints that the sites refuse to pay out, with the Government estimating that up to $400 million is spent on illegal gambling websites annually.
