Australia helps enforce sanctions on North Korea
Australia is deploying a Royal Australian Navy frigate, HMAS Parramatta to support implementing United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea.
Australia will work with international partners, maintaining pressure on North Korea to take concrete, verifiable and irreversible steps towards denuclearisation.
Since 2018, Australia has supported international efforts to deter and disrupt North Korea’s illicit trade and sanction-evasion activities.
Increased fatigue concerns for trainee doctors
Despite bullying reports going down, there is increased concern regarding fatigue in trainee doctors working excessive hours.
The latest AMA Queensland public hospital report surveyed 882 junior doctors across the state.
Chair of the AMA Queensland Council of Doctors in Training,Dr Hash Abdeen says it is very troubling that only a quarter of bullying incidents are being reported and 57% of junior doctors fear negative consequences from speaking up.
“22 per cent said they had felt unsafe at work," said Dr Abdeen.
17-year-old girl strip-searched
A 17-year-old girl was among over 20 Extinction Rebellion activist strip-searched by the Brisbane police.
Police warned the girl she would be strip-searched if she was arrested again.
The founder of the organisation Sisters Inside, Debbie Kilroy, said that strip-searching this girl was a “sexual assault by the state”.

Instagram bans plastic surgery filters
Instagram has banned all augmented reality filters that depict cosmetic surgery.
Research suggests the face-altering make users feel worse about the way they look.
A spokesman for Instagram says they are re-evaluating their policies and want the filters to be a positive experience for users.
Organic farming increasing carbon emissions
Research indicates greenhouse gas emissions would rise if all farms in England and Wales went organic as a result of increasing food exports to compensate for the low organic yields.
According to the analysis, for wheat and barley, organic farmers only yield half compared to conventional farmers, meaning 1.5 times more land would be required to grow the same amount of produce.
Laurence Smith from the Royal Agricultural University in the UK who was involved in the analysis says organic farming has a greenhouse gas problem that can’t be ignored.
NSW providing secure employment for refugees
NSW is leading the country in providing secure, long-term employment opportunities for refugee job seekers.
The NSW Government has implemented a four-year program, the Refugee Employment Support Program (RESP), which aims at supporting refugees and asylum seekers into sustainable employment.
Rania Shahoud, a refugee from Syria, arrived in Australia with zero English language proficiency, today she is employed by social enterprise bakery under the RESP.
NSW Government urged to declare climate emergency
Late yesterday afternoon, the New South Wales State Government was urged to declare a climate emergency in both houses of parliament as emissions continue to rise globally.
Greens MP Cate Faehrmann and Tamara Smith Member for Ballina encouraged the discussion calling for Liberals and Nationals to take urgent action to address climate change.
Ms Faehrmann says that Governments around the world have seen the writing on the wall and are declaring a climate emergency and Australia cannot afford to sit on our hands any longer.
Animal activists call to ban calf roping
Animal activists call for the Queensland Premier and Agriculture Minister to ban the rodeo event of calf roping.
Calf roping in Rodeo remains permitted despite a 2016 University of Queensland scientific study showing calf roping causes the young animals significant stress.
More than 58 000 people have signed a petition calling for a ban on the event in Queensland, and another 14 000 have sent emails to their state MPs and the Agricultural Minister.
Logan City Council purchases land for conservation
Logan City Council purchases 47 hectares of land at Bahrs Scrub containing several rare tree species and a koala habitat.
Half the site consists of rainforest and includes the bush tucker species small-leaved tamarind.
Council’s Director Strategy and Sustainability, David Hansen says the Environmental Levy reserve was set up by the council to save funds in the event significant environmental land became available for purchase.
