65 people killed in train fire

Flames roared through the train cars as the train approached the town of Liaquatpur in Punjab, they said, the latest tragedy to hit Pakistan’s dilapidated, poorly maintained and mismanaged rail system.

Deputy Commissioner Jamil Ahmed said the fire broke out when a gas stove exploded as breakfast was being prepared on board.

Koala habitat burnt

Thousands of hectares of prime koala habitat near Port Macquarie has been burnt during this week's Crestwood-Lake Cathie fire, killing as many as 350 of the marsupials and many other species.

Wildlife researchers visited some of the areas destroyed in the bushfire but only located two live koalas during a survey of about 100 hectares.

"The whole place went up at once," Scott Castle said, assistant clinical director at the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie. "About two-thirds of the area that was burnt is good quality [koala] habitat."

Recommendations of decriminalizing personal drugs use and possession

The council assisting the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry into Ice has recommended decriminalising personal drug use and possession.

The commission will also be told that a drug-testing trial should be introduced at music festivals and other ongoing fixed locations.

Ms Dowling will recommend the New South Wales Government implement a new policy emphasising drug use as "a health and social issue" rather than a criminal one.

The commission heard from more than 160 witnesses in hearings across regional areas including Lismore, Nowra, Broken Hill and Moree.

Two quick-thinking Swedish nurses have been credited with saving the lives of two shark attack victims by grabbing anything they could, on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Swedish couple Billy Ludvigsson, who is an ambulance nurse, and Emma Andersson, an emergency response nurse, were on a day cruise vessel where the men were loaded after the attack.

Ms Andersson said they helped the man who was loaded on first but his injury was less severe.

Mix-use office in Dutton park

A development application for a mixed-use office, healthcare and community space at the heritage-listed Boggo Road Gaol precinct in Dutton Park has been lodged with Brisbane City Council.

The application was made by development group Stockwell, which has been working with the state government to revamp plans for the state-owned site after a 2017 proposal was scrapped.

"boutique commercial development", which is the heritage boundary surrounding the 1880-era site, proposes demolishing some newer parts of the jail.
